At this time of year there’s lots of material on trees and shrubs that will bring the colours of autumn to the garden. Here’s our roundup of some of the trees and shrubs for autumn colour that we like best.

Rhus typhina ‘Tiger Eyes’

This is a small deciduous tree with leaves that turn a dazzling orange in autumn. This particular specimen has a compact habit with a height and spread of 2 metres so would be an appropriate choice for a small garden.


Amelanchier lamarckii

Another beautiful small deciduous tree. The foliage on Amelanchier lamarckii turns orange and red in autumn and it also bears attractive white flowers in spring. It has an upright and open habit and tolerates most soils.


Euonymus alatus

Euonymus alatus is a reliable performer for fine autumn colour when its leaves turn a rosy-crimson. It has a bushy habit, tolerates most soils and has a height and spread of 2 metres.

Parrotia persica

The Persian Ironwood is a deciduous tree that colours well in autumn. It is wide spreading and often multi stemmed, growing to a height of 8 metres. As it matures it reveals attractive flaking bark.


Prunus sargentii

Prunus sargentii is a deciduous tree with a spreading rounded crown. Its ovate leaves turn bright orange and red in autumn, and its flowers are a dark pink in spring. It ultimately grows to a height of 10 metres or more with a spread of 8 metres.


Cotinus ‘Flame’

As the name suggests, this Cotinus has fiery autumn foliage. Cotinus ‘Flame’ is a large deciduous shrub with leaves that turn bright orange and red in autumn. It has a bushy habit and grows to a height of 6 metres with a spread of 3 metres.


Disanthus cercidifolius

Disanthus cercidifolius is a medium sized deciduous shrub with wide spreading branches and heart shaped leaves that turn deep crimson, purple and orange in autumn. Height and spread is 2m.

This Acer is a large deciduous shrub with a rounded habit. Its leaves turn a beautiful brilliant scarlet in autumn. It tolerates most soils and has a height and spread of 3 metres.
